Peggy Estrada featured in Education Week

November 16, 2016

Peggy Estrada, associate research scientist in the Department of Latin American and Latino Studies, was featured in Education Week.

Estrada discusses her research on English Language Learners (ELLs).

In her short featured video clip, Estrada talks about the barriers that ELLs face when they enter middle school and high school. She says that these students’ “opportunity to learn is affected in a variety of ways… it’s restricted by less access to core content, less access to the full curriculum, higher performing peers, and often increased placement in remedial instruction.”  These students therefore become "linguistically and academically isolated,” making success at the secondary level very challenging.
