The Joel Frankel Memorial Fund - 2009

Joel Frankel was an outstanding Merrill College student and Politics major interested in Latin America. A veteran of field study in Colombia, Joel was interested in humanitarian struggles in Central and South America. He died of leukemia shortly after graduating from UCSC in 1979. Joel's family and friends established a scholarship fund in his memory.

Administered by the LALS Program, these small grants are used to assist students with the expenses of field study projects in Latin America or in Latina/o communities in the U.S. The focus of the field study should involve social change in Latin America or Latino communities in the U.S. Funds are allocated based on the following criteria: soundness and feasibility of the proposal, evidence of sufficient academic training in the chosen field, and demonstrated economic need.
