The focus of the 2002 Institute
The focus for the 2002 Institute is
Transnational Organizing for Social Justice.

Educational activities will include:

  • Analysis of impacts of the international economy on local organizing
  • Structured discussions and activities around issues relevant to transnational organizing
  • Site visits to active organizing experiences in the local communities
  • Specific skill development using computer technologies, communication, funding strategies, and other areas of potential use to your work.
Social Change Across Borders Summer Institute will create opportunities for collaboration and networking with leaders of participating organizations. Participants are encouraged to develop strategic plans including potential joint efforts with fellow participants and the university or training other groups in their region.

There will be approximately 20 people accepted to this year's Institute. Room, board, and tuition expenses will be covered entirely by the university and the funders of the project. The participant and his/her organization will be asked to help cover travel costs on a sliding scale basis.

Institutional backing, not measured monetarily, but through the support of the individual in applying and disseminating the lessons learned from the Institute is a key factor for acceptance into the program. A letter of support from the director of the applicant's organization must accompany the application, briefly explaining how the applicant's learning experience will be shared with co-workers and potential collaborators.
