Combined Majors

Students can combine the LALS major with either Global Economics, Politics, Sociology, or Literature.

Both departments must approve a study plan before the combined major can be declared. Major and thesis honors are determined separately and granted only when both departments concur. Students interested in pursuing a combined major should first obtain a "Study Plan/Declaration Major/Minor Form". Once completed, first bring it to your college advisor to verify the information and sign your form.
Then bring the form to the other major department (combined or double major).

When you are done with the other major i.e. form signed by the advisor and faculty advisor, you then can attend the LALS major declaration workshop, offered by Alessandra Álvares, the undergraduate advisor in LALS.

To attend the workshop, you have to sign-up at the bulletin board outside the department office.

Workshop schedule varies, check here for step-by-step information on the major declaration process, and here for available dates.

The LALS office is located on 32 Merrill, Merrill college.

If you need to make an appointment with Alessandra, you can do so by walking in to our office (again, 32 Merril) and signing up for a time convenient to you (usually Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons), or, call 459-4284 to schedule it.

The LALS department provides the combined major worksheets as a guide for students:

Global Economics - Worksheet
Literature - Worksheet
Politics - Worksheet
Sociology - Worksheet

Double Majors

The Latin American and Latino Studies Department welcomes students wishing to pursue a double major. Double majors must meet the full requirements of both the LALS major and the second major. Courses used to satisfy one major may not be used to satisfy requirements for the other major. A separate thesis or project must be submitted to meet each set of Senior Exit Requirements. Honors are awarded independently by each department.

Students interested in pursuing a double major should first obtain a "Study Plan/Declaration Major/Minor Form", complete it, go see the college advisor and afterwards, see the majors advisors for both majors.

To declare the LALS major, you have to attend the LALS major declaration workshop, offered by Alessandra Álvares, the undergraduate advisor in LALS.

Workshop schedule varies, check here for step-by-step information on the major declaration process, and here for available dates.
