Details of major declaration process:

Students interested in pursuing a major in Latin American and Latino studies are encouraged to read about our program here.

In order to declare LALS major please go to the online Undergraduate Advising Center at http://advising.ucsc.edu/student/declaration/index.html to download an enterable PDF of the Declaration of Major form (Step 1 of the "Steps to Declare").

Then, using your Degree Progress Report and Student Advising Summary on the Student Portal, you will enter your completed GE requirements, University requirements, College requirements, completed credits, and expected graduating quarter.

Once completed, first bring it to your college adviser to verify the information and sign your form.
Then bring the form to the other major department (if you are combined or double major). When you are done with the other major (if applicable) i.e. signed by the advisor and faculty advisor, you then can attend the LALS major declaration workshop, offered by Alessandra Álvares, the undergraduate advisor in LALS.

To attend the workshop, you have to sign-up at the bulletin board outside the department office.

Workshop schedule varies, check this page for available dates, your weekly email and the sign-up sheet at the LALS bulletin board.

The LALS office is located on 32 Merrill, Merrill college.

If you need to make an appointment with Alessandra, you can do so by walking in to our office (again, 32 Merril) and signing up for a time convenient to you (usually Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons), or, call 459-4284 to schedule it.

Drop-ins are also encouraged around student appointment times.

If you are a transfer student you will also need to obtain from the Admissions Office a list of all coursework that you have transferred from other institutions (if you have taken LALS courses and want to possibly use them towards the major).

The undergraduate advisor will help you to complete a plan of study. You will then be referred to a LALS faculty member (your advisor) to discuss your interests in Latin American and Latino Studies.
