LALS Best Paper Award

LALS Undergraduate Best Paper Award showcases outstanding work produced by LALS undergraduates.
Nominations by LALS instructors.

 

Eligibility

  • Any junior or senior LALS major or combined major is eligible for the competition 
  • The submission must have been composed when the student was an undergraduate and enrolled in an LALS upper-division course (including 194 Senior Seminar) during Spring, Fall or Winter quarters preceding the nomination in April

Paper Requirements

  • Papers may be in English, Spanish, or Portuguese
  • Submissions should be at least 10 double-spaced pages, but no more than 25 double-spaced pages, in 12-point font, including bibliography, notes, and images/figures
  • The paper’s formatting (e.g., citations, bibliography, etc.) should be consistent

 

Submissions process

  • Papers should be submitted by instructors in PDF via email to lalsadvising@ucsc.edu by the deadline (usually the first Friday of Spring quarter).
  • Please write “LALS Best Paper Nomination” in the subject line of the email
  • The email should include a brief description of the paper assignment from the syllabus

Nominations and submissions will only be accepted from LALS instructors (students may not submit papers on their own).  Faculty do not need to write a separate letter in support.

The awardee will receive a $100 gift certificate from the UCSC Bay Tree Bookstore. The winner will be announced by the end of May and will be invited to be honored at the LALS End of Year Celebration at the end of Spring quarter.

The awardee will also be included in the LALS “Hall of Fame” in the department and featured on the LALS website.
