Personal Interests

Are Assessments Useful?

There's a lot of confusion around the usefulness of personality inventory tests and career interest assessments. (And no, we're not talking about a Facebook quiz that determines which Hunger Games character you are.) If you are not sure what you want to do, or you have some ideas but you want to see more, you have nothing to lose!

Monterey Bay Career Connect

If you are looking for work locally, you should absolutely look at Monterey Bay Career Connect for their internship and job databases, which pull directly from popular job search site Indeed.

But first you might want to check out Monterey Bay Career Coach, which offers its own career assessment and links to careers and your match percentage with each. You don't need an account to use this feature!

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

One of the most popular personality-type tests is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It's based on famed psychologist Carl Jung's work in personality types, developed by a daughter-mother team (Isabel Myers and Katherine Briggs) to use in exactly the way we're recommending: to learn more about yourself so you can figure out what you want to do.

The UCSC Career Center offers the full version of the Myers-Briggs and some other assessments, too:

  • Myers-Briggs cost is $15
  • Visit the Career Center to arrange the test
  • After the test you have a follow-up meeting with one of their professional career counselors

Some of you are pressed for time, or money, or maybe you are completely skeptical about this whole thing. You can find free versions of the test online with a quick search. This is a cool site to find out more about the exam and to read about your type and its ideal jobs.

O*NET is resource for exploring career interests and education requirements. The O*NET Interest Profiler is another assessment that can get you started in exploring the site's vast resources. It's easy and fun to use!

Once you know a little more about your personal interests, you'll have an easier time finding work.
