The Latin American Studies & Latino Studies Department is sad to announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Walter ("Wally") Goldfrank.

Wally was a beloved teacher, colleague, friend and founding faculty member of the Latin American & Latino Studies Department.

Wally's commitment to justice and peace was integral to every aspect of his life. From his early activism in the 'Freedom Summer' campaigns of 1964 to his justice work with the ACLU; from his on-the-ground perspective on Chile's civil war to his impassioned courses on World Society, Revolutions, and Sociology of Sports.

Wally co-founded Merrill College, served as Provost of College 8, split his time with LALS and Sociology, and remained an active tennis and, later bridge player.

Wally retired from UCSC in 2009, but in true Wally fashion, he remained active in the department through his mentoring of graduate students and teaching of LALS undergraduates. Wally remained a teacher, mentor and friend for us all until the end.

Donations can be made in Wally's name to Wally Goldfrank Student Award.
